Funding Options
Types of financial aid.
Merit-Based Scholarships
Awarded based on academic excellence, leadership, extracurricular achievements, or artistic talent. These scholarships do not need to be repaid and range from a few thousand dollars to full tuition coverage. Most Canadian universities automatically consider international students for entrance scholarships.
Need-Based Bursaries
Financial assistance for students who demonstrate genuine financial need. Many universities offer bursaries that don't require repayment. These are typically assessed based on your family's financial situation and the gap between your resources and the cost of education.
Government-Funded Awards
The Canadian government and provincial governments offer various funding programs for international students. These include the Vanier Scholarship, Ontario Trillium Scholarships, and bilateral exchange programs. Some home countries also offer government sponsorships for studying abroad.
University-Specific Awards
Individual universities offer their own scholarship programs specifically for international students. These range from entrance awards to in-course scholarships, research assistantships, and teaching assistantships. Our team maintains an up-to-date database of over 200 university-specific awards.
Expert Advice
Tips for applying.
Start Researching Early
Begin your scholarship search at least 6-12 months before your planned start date. Many prestigious awards have deadlines 8-10 months before the academic year begins.
Apply to Multiple Scholarships
Don't rely on a single application. Apply for every scholarship you're eligible for - smaller awards add up, and some are less competitive than you might think.
Craft a Compelling Personal Statement
Tell your unique story. Scholarship committees want to understand your motivations, challenges you've overcome, and the impact you plan to make. Be authentic and specific.
Highlight Leadership & Community Impact
Most Canadian scholarships value community involvement and leadership. Document your volunteer work, extracurricular activities, and any initiatives you've led or contributed to.
Get Strong Reference Letters
Choose referees who know you well and can speak to your abilities with specific examples. Give them plenty of notice and provide context about the scholarship and your goals.
